I call it “social donating” — and it’s the best way to help raise funds for a good cause without spending a penny.
The concept is simple: Use social media, like Facebook and Twitter, to spread the word about a good cause.
Just one week after “Ondoy” flooded Manila I noticed the news media coverage had already slowed down. That’s natural for any story that “broke” a week ago.
But what’s going to happen when “Ondoy” isn’t covered at all? When there’s no media coverage, there’s no urgency to take action for the cause — no inspiration.
That’s a problem because there are still going to be tens of thousands of “Ondoy” victims with no shelter, no money, and minimal food.
That got me thinking — what if we use our social networks — our Facebooks and Twitters — to help keep the cause in the spotlight for as long as it takes to recover?
That’s the idea behind “social donating” — when the news media fails, you’ll still be there, posting and tweeting about the funds and prayers the victims still need. So here’s the game plan:
Calling all Facebookers, Twitterers, and Bloggers:
Short on cash but big on social media? Here’s your chance to be an “Online Volunteer” and help typhoon victims today.
There are several ways you can help — but here are two you can get started with right now:
1) Twitter: Tweet about the four ways that people can help Philippines victims right now. The more people that know about “social donating”, the more people we’ll get to donate, volunteer, and pray for the typhoon victims.
2) Facebook: It’s the same idea as above. Not sure what to post about? Add our “Social Donating” Facebook application and our five most recent updates and calls-to-action will be posted to your FB profile automatically.
You can get started by using the “Share This” button you’ll find on the bottom of every page and blog post on SocialDonating.org!
